This photograph was taken in the Pacific Ocean north of Tofino in September 2013. We were aboard a tour boat named the Leviathan II, owned and operated by Jamie’s Whaling Station in Tofino, British Columbia. This is the same vessel that sank in October 2015 killing 6 British tourists.
Fortunately, our outing did not end in tragedy. We have gone on three separate whale watching tours in British Columbia. Two were out of Victoria on Eagle Wing Whale Watching and one was on Jamie’s Whaling Tour. The Eagle Wing tours were far superior. The boats were extremely fast and we saw many Orcas. Jamie’s tour did allow us to see some humpback and grey whales but they were not very close.
The scenery in the channels close to the mainland north of Tofino was spectacular.
The whale watching scenery – less so. But at least we saw a few large whales.
